July´s News

  • Official Posts Abound... (7/30)

Again, Erich Schaefer makes some appearances in the DiabloII.net Player Suggestions Forum.  This time he spilled the beans on a few new Paladin skills, including some extended information on the Paladin skill called Fanaticism.  Here are his posts, the first on unique items throughout Diablo II:

    "Yes, I named it :)"

A simple response on the item named the "Schaefer Hammer."  A followup for information about other items named after Blizzard employees was answered this way:

"Yes, but I'm not going to spoil the fun."

Here´s the information on Fanaticism:

"Fanaticism increases the Paladin's attack speed along with anyone else in his party within a certain radius (you will see an indicator if you are being effected). You will keep getting faster and faster with each level of the skill as well as getting a larger party radius. However, the increase in speed will scale down such that going from level 8 to 9 will have a very, very small effect."

And a simple response to what Hand of God might do:

    "Strikes down your undead foes."

There was also a lot of guesses to what the tree shrine in the Barbarbian Gameplay Movie is.  If you want my guess, read our analysis on that movie here.

  • A Blizzard Business Card. (7/30)

Azrael has released a scanned copy of one of the business cards Blizzard distributed at E3 this year.  You can see this scan (it omits the name, address, and phone number of the card´s owner) in our Special  Screenshots gallery or directy through this link

It´s been a busy day for all of the Diablo II-related forums, as official Blizzard represenatives have been turning up everywhere.  On the official Diablo II Suggestions Board Max Schaefer made an apperance to clarify a statement he had made earlier (in this post):

I think I may have been smarter 2-3 years ago! :) But seriously, the lev. 38 comment was in a different context. Believe me, the game will be harder to complete than the original Diablo. And it will most likely take much longer to get to level 38 than the original as well. The game will take more brains, more tactics, and more strategy than before. The style of play between the characters is more differentiated, and the difficulty of the overall quest will be significant. Bottom line, we have not dumbed down Diablo. The opposite is true!

You can see the original post here

  • 2 New Official Posts... (7/29)

It looks like DiabloII.net´s Player Suggestions Forum was blessed by two more official posts, this time by Erich Schaefer:

"Characters have gold stored with their characters and in their bank (or stash) and it takes up no inventory space. The gold stored with the character is subject to loss on death (not sure to what degree)."

"You will be prevented from jumping off a cliff by the fact that the the skill requires a valid destination to use. So there will be no effect if attempt to target a spot "off a cliff" or otherwise inaccessable."

Too bad about the Leap skill for the Barbarian, it would be nice to jump off of some cliffs now and then.  Good way to avoid monsters too.

  • Official Posts. (7/29)

Blizzard´s Mike Huang made a stop at DiabloII.net´s Player Suggestions Forum and made a few announcements:

"The length of the beta has not been determined yet. However long it takes us to test what we need to test. ;)"

"Most of the balancing issues are things done in house, however, if we do find something particularly abusive in the beta, we will probably examine the issue and fix the problem, if it exists. As for cheats, letting 1000 beta testers loose with cheat codes would be particularly unconstructive -- instead of playing the game, they'd be cheating. Not real useful to us. So, no cheat codes for D2 beta."

"Becoming a level 38 necro might not take as long as you think -- though at some point in the beta the monsters will start to give you almost no experience. At that point, it becomes nearly impossible to continue to level. I have no doubt that there will be beta testers who will stay up and play continuously in order to level."

He also made a quick post on the Battle.net Diablo II Suggestions Forum, saying this about 3D in Diablo II:

You can read that official post here

  • Fansite Interview... (7/28)

It looks like the Fansite interview for August has been awarded to DiabloII.com.  Congratulations everyone, I hope your questions give us new information.

  • Barbarian Movie Analysis. (7/28)

We´ve finished our analysis of the Barbarian Gameplay Movie, including pictures of the most interesting moments in the video itself.  You can find our analysis in our Articles section or directly by clicking here.

  • RealPlayer Movie... (7/28)

The Barbarian Gameplay Video has been released in the RealPlayer format.  It´s in our Downloads section, and it´s only 5.5 MB this time around.  Remember, you´ll need a version of the RealVideo player to view this one.

The Diablo II Suggestions Forum on Battle.net saw a few posts by Blizzard.  This one was by Mike Huang about yesterday´s  SSOTW:

No, what this means is that certain skills can be used in town, while certain skills cannot. None of the skills displayed in the SSOTW is a offensive skill, so they cannot harm others.

You can see the original post on Battle.net hereMax Schaefer also had this to say about the number of characters in the shot, which was nine:

We have no limit on players in the game in our internal version right now. The screen shot is real, and there's no cut and paste going on. The figure at the top is an NPC, so there are 9 players in this game. Figure on 8 most likely in the final.

So, while there will probably only be eight allowable in the final Diablo II, they´re experimenting with more at this time.  You can see the original post here

  • Download Mirrors... (7/27)

If the Blizzard FTP download is bogged down I have three new mirrors you can use to download the new Barbarian Gameplay Movie.  You can find these mirrors in our Downloads section.

  • Screenshot of the Week! (7/27)

A new screenshot of the week has been released, and this one may be the best yet.  It features a total of 9 characters of all types and varieties in different poses and actions.  But don´t take my word for it, see it for yourself:

And, of course, the cinematic shot from Blizzard´s main page

The Barbarian Gameplay Movie is now available from Blizzard´s server.  You can find this download in our Downloads section.  We will have an analysis and some download mirrors up as soon as we can.

  • A Call to our Viewers... (7/26)

The staff here at ShadowSpiral Diablo II is looking for original content for this site, a goal that we need your input to succeed at.  We like to think that this site is for everyone´s benefit, and as such we would like anyone and everyone who thinks something is lacking in the site to e-mail us their suggestions for improvement on any aspect of this site, be it the Articles or our Newsletter.  Please e-mail your thoughts to me, I will address them as best I can.

  • Australian Mag. Scans. (7/25)

After Saturday´s absence we have returned once again to report the news.  In this case, scanned images from the Australian Magazine preview await you here at the Diablo II Trinity.  Unfortunately this preview has no new information or screenshots, the piece of info about being in an underwater level was actually the Sewers of Act II.  It´s a good read, nonetheless, and a good way to catch up on any new features you might have missed.

  • WebMaster Absences... (7/23)

Just a warning that for tomorrow no one will be updating here at ShadowSpiral Diablo II due to work being done on our server.  The site will still be accessible, it´s just that we won´t be updating it till Sunday.  Sorry for any inconveniences this might cause...

  • New Guild Site... (7/23)

A new Diablo II guild, the Apostles of Reverence, have their site up and accepting new members.  This guild has been added to our Community section, and if you´re interested in being part of a guild I suggest paying them a visit.

  • Australian Magazine Preview. (7/23)

An Australian gaming magazine has released a Diablo II preview.  It contains the usual information, but has also been said to have a few tidbits of new information.  Among this new information is talk about an underwater part of Act III and NPC´s having conflicts of interest.  There is also rumored to be a new screenshot featuring the Sorceress and Necromancer in a multiplayer game.  More info on this as soon as its available.

A few posts by Blizzard´s GFrazier appeared on the Battle.net War Room, here is the first on the beta test:

"It will probably be exactly like ever other beta, Battle.net only, no single player, given a CDkey. When beta is over it will be disabled."

So that should cover the beta questions, and you can see the actual post here.  This next post deals with the current state of the Fansite program:

"As to how to get in the program, there was a 3 month window of sign up late last year for anyone who wanted to join. After those 3 months the fan site program was closed off and as of now there are no plans to reopen it for new members. It is possible it will be opened again for new members in the future."

So it appears as the Fansite program has been closed after everyone entered in.  We are an official Fansite, for the record.  See the post on Battle.net here

  • A Correction. (7/21)

It appears that Shoplet isn´t an online auction site as I thought, but an online CD-ROM outlet instead.  There are several items listed on their boards that concern Diablo II besides the PSX (Playstation) Diablo II CD, and apparently (after they explained it to me) these are all for preorders of the software.  One thing remains, however, Blizzard has not said that there will be a PSX version of Diablo II, let alone established an ETA for it.  Many different software retailers claim different ETA´s for Diablo II, and none of them are official.  Your best bet is to steer clear of preordering Diablo II just yet.

  • Neverending Humor... (7/21)

First Ebay, now Shoplet.  It seems that someone is offering the Playstation version of Diablo II on Shoplet, it´s at a steal for only $135.95 too.  I wouldn´t bid on this item, it´s patently false and will probably be removed very soon.  Click here to see it for your own.

  • Monsters in Diablo II... (7/21)

The question was posed on Diablo II.net´s forums, and this answer came from Blizzard´s Erich Schaefer:

I did a quick count and we have over 60 unique monster models.

We do a lot of palette shifting to get extra types (usually between three and four per model), which shouldn't really count as extra monsters, but a fair amount have their own individual AIs and spells.

We also get a lot of variety from the component system. For instance, many monsters can carry shields which directly affect the gameplay.

On top of these regular monsters we have: random Uniques, with randomly generated abilities and minions; random Champions, with a different set of abilities and always found alone; specific Uniques, like those from Diablo(I); Spawners that sometimes act like monsters; and monster-like objects, like turrets that shoot fireballs.

    So... lots of fun stuff

Champions with different abilities and turrets that shoot Fireballs?  I think that Hell is really out to get us this time around.  You can find the original post by Mr. Schaefer here

  • New Rendered Shot. (7/20)

As always, a new Rendered Shot proceeds a SSOTW shot.  Here is the new Rendered Shot from Blizzard´s main page, and you can find it archived in our Sketches and Rendered Shots section:

Blizzard has released the newest Screenshot of the Week, which you can see here:

We have archived some of July´s older news in our News Archive.  If you feel you´ve missed some of our older news please check the archive under July

  • Blizzard Announcements... (7/19)

Today Blizzard made a few announcements, one concerning the debate over the Necromancer and his look and the other regarding the lucky winners of the PCAccelerator contest.  This on the Necromancer:

"Actually, there are two "correct" images. One was for the poster at E3, the other was for the T-shirts. The one we sent to the Fansites was for the T-shirts. But nonetheless, both are "correct". Both have long hair, but the version released last week, the long hair is not as visible as the other version. If you look you can definitely see that his hair does extend past his shoulders. One was formatted for a tall poster, and the other is a wider version. "

And the winners of the PCAccelerator contest:

Jan Lester N Martinez of Houston, TX
    Adam Ridley of Cairo, GA
Peter Norby of San Mateo, CA
    Karen Cherne of Coon Rapids
    Roger Doerflein of Indianapolis, IN
Michael K Mosley of St. Louis, MO

These lucky few will visit Blizzard´s offices in CA and get play Diablo II, not to mention see the top brass.  Congratulations everyone, hope you have a great time.

There´s a RealVideo version of the newest Gamestar Gameplay movie available.  You can find it in our Downloads section, and its size is only 13.2 MB, down from from the 41 MB it formerly was.

3DNow!, an API used within the AMD processor, has a list of games supported by its technology.  Diablo II itself appears in the list of games that will support and be optimized by AMD´s 3DNow! inititative.  It also lists Diablo II´s ETA as third quarter `99, quite interesting.  You can see the list here

  • Return of the Darkness. (7/19)

The Diablo II Darkness, the Community´s monster encyclopedia, has returned after a long absense.  The site has always been a favorite, and it is now back up with an exceptional, new layout.  Please give them a visit.

  • Fansite Interview Posted... (7/18)

The newest Fansite Interview, given to Diablo 2 North, has just been posted on their site.  Unfortunately there wasn´t really a lot revealed in this interview, but a few points of knowledge were expanded upon.  You can read the interview here and it is in English.

  • Newsletter Sent. (7/18)

The tenth edition of the ShadowSpiral Diablo II Newsletter has been sent and should arrive in everyone´s in-box shortly.  If you have any problems with the newsletter or want to offer any comments or suggestions then just let me know.

  • More News on the AVI... (7/17)

Another post on the Battle.net forums, this one at the War Room by GFrazier:

We are trying to get more Barbarian skills into the game before we begin putting together the movie. We willbegin working on it next week although we do not have an estimation on when it will be released.

Well, I guess we will be seeing that promised Barbarian AVI in about a week.  See the post here

  • Color Questions. (7/17)

Apparently there has been some questions as to the amount of colors that will be used in Diablo II.  When asked about the subject, Mike Huang has this to say:

Diablo II will have 256 colors in the default video mode. It is possible with a 3D Accelerator that works with this game to have a display of more colors than 256. All screenshots of the week (so far) have been taken in Glide mode, and that is why the screenshots have more than 256 colors.

Incidentally, Diablo II will support both Direct3D and Glide 3dfx.  See the post here

  • A Question of Respect... (7/16)

The newest issue of GamePro, a respectable gaming magazine, recently ran a series of its impressions of E3 called "The Best of E3."  However, these impressions missed what many would consider a vital element of the show: Diablo II.  The magazine made absolutely no mention of Diablo II, but instead added Nox, a game considered by many to be a Diablo-clone... strange indeed.  Thanks go out to Landarth of Diablo II World for pointing this out.

  • Hell Gate Poster Art. (7/16)

Today Blizzard released a gigantic new rendered shot and .bmp picture which is an expanded version of the poster art they had at E3, it also appeared on the Blizzard team´s shirts.  You can see the rendered shot version below and download the 1.9 MB .bmp file from our Downloads section.

It seems that the Fansite Interview for this month, awarded to Diablo 2 North, is a little late in coming (most likely due to Blizzard´s move to new offices).  The WebMasters at Diablo 2 North say that they´ve already e-mailed their questions in, but Blizzard hasn´t responded yet.  The questions should be in soon, and when they are we will have some news to report on.

Darkstone, made by the Gathering of Developers, is one of the contenders for some of Diablo II´s prospective fame.  There is a small preview for it up at the Adrenaline Vault, so if you´re interested in things to pass the time before Diablo II comes out send your browser here

  • Metzen on ZDTV. (7/14)

Chris Metzen, senior designer of Diablo II, has made an appearance on ZDTV.  Although the video has no new information of shots of game action, it is a rather interesting snippit to watch.  The video is in RealVideo format, and you can link to it from here

  • French Magazine Translation... (7/14)

We finally have a translation for the PC Force article up, and you can find it in our Articles section or directly by clicking here.  Thanks to elvenstar for the translation.

  • Diablo II on Ebay News. (7/14)

We just recieved an e-mail from Tony Gervase, who is our public relations contact at Blizzard, that the auction item on Ebay is indeed fake.  If you have bid on this item I would advise you cancel that bid.  Ebay will most likely remove this fake item as soon as possible.

  • French Diablo II Preview... (7/14)

A new French Diablo II preview has become available from the French gaming magazine PC Force.  The preview is said to have lots of new information, but we are without a translation so we can´t confirm anything as of yet.  This preview also has an interview with Matt Samia, and you can see the whole thing here

Geoff Frazier, of the Blizzard Web team, discussed the Barbarian AVI and its reasons for not being available yet on the Battle.net War Room:

"This didn't mean that it would be released next week but instead that we expect to start shooting around then. Quite a lot of work is involved in creating them. I've Barbarian Avi is on my check list and isn't being forgotten :)."

Which means the AVI should be available any time now.  We´ll keep you posted.

  • E-Mail Changes... (7/13)

As a result of our move, each member of the ShadowSpiral team now has his or her own e-mail address that they each use.  I can be found at darkk@shadowspiral.com while the Assitant WebMaster here at ShadowSpiral Diablo II can be e-mailed at forscythe@shadowspiral.com.  We are also hard at work on some additions to the site, which should be unveiled soon.

  • Diablo II on Ebay? (7/13)

Strangely enough, it appears that a Diablo II beta CD is available on Ebay´s auction forums.  Here is the tag on the item:

DIABLO II on CD is available in a (FULL-VERSION) IBM compatable. Pentium 166 min. requirement. This is not a demo. This game comes complete and is in limited quantities. This is the blockbuster everyones been waiting for. Now available in full version beta. Shipper pays $4.00 and insurance is at the discretion of the buyer. This full version is CD.

This is obviously a hoax, so I wouldn´t bid on this item as it doesn´t quite exist yet.  Blizzard is looking into this item on Ebay and will have news on it soon.  Until now, click here to see it for yourself.  Thanks to Labaron for the lead.

  • New Preview... (7/13)

There is a new Diablo II preview that has gone up over at Gamesdomain, you can see the preview itself here.  While the preview has no new information or screenshots, it is well-ordered and mostly correct.  If you´ve missed some of the other previews you might one to see this one.

  • Screenshot of the Week. (7/13)

Blizzard has a new screenshot of the week up, which you can see here:

As with any release of a SSOTW, a new Rendered Shot is also available:

Some people may have noticed that Battle.net and Blizzard´s main page have been having a few technical problems as of late.  This is because they are in the process of moving, and everything is sort of touch and go at the moment.  Please don´t overload their servers with e-mail about the problems, they are quite aware of them.  Everything should be back to normal soon.

  • All Shots Loaded. (7/12)

The most arduous part of our move to the new server, the uploading of pictures to our Pics Gallery, has finally been completed.  Please feel free to browse our pics to see if they are all in order and in the appropriate section.

  • More Pics Up... (7/11)

Well, we have everything but our Sketches online at the moment, and everything can be viewed from our Pics Gallery section.  If you find any problems with any of the picture section please let us know so we can correct it.

  • Diablo II Status... (7/11)

Max Schaefer sends word of Diablo II´s status as he prepares to move to a new office:

"We're working like CRAZY on the game right now, and everyone is getting ready to have this thing done. Right now, our efforts are focused on getting ready for the upcoming beta. Most of the content is done, and we're tying up a lot of loose ends. From here on in, our emphasis is on testing, balancing, testing, and testing."

  • Getting Everything in Line. (7/10)

We´re still getting the site up on our new server, as so far we´ve managed to get our Special Screenshots and 50 of our general Screenshots up on the site.  We should have it all up and ready by the end of the weekend, so please bear with us.

  • Contenders for the Crown. (7/9)

Many Diablo II fansites and RPG sites alike have been in a torrential buzz about up and coming computer games like Westwood´s Nox, Eidos´s Revenant, and the Gathering of Developers´ Darkstone.  We will have an expanded feature for these games soon, as they promise to be some direct competition for Diablo II.

  • Special Screenshots... (7/8)

We have the entire Special Screenshots area of our Pics Gallery back up on our new server.  The Rendered Shots, Sketches, and other screenshots should be up in the next few days.  Thanks for your patience.

  • Screenshots of the Week Are Back. (7/8)

We have our Screenshots of the Week back up and able to be browsed on our new server.  The other pics will be back up soon, be in the meantime feel free to browse the Screenshots of the Week from our Special Screenshots section.

  • Release Date Update... (7/7)

It appears that the release date given by the Adrenaline Vault in the news post we covered below is indeed false.  Blizzard still ascertains that they do not have a solid release date, this from Blizzard´s Max Schaefer:

    Hey all,

The release date posted at Avault is obviously fictional. We have not specified any release date, and will not until the game is done.

The quote in question reads: Now it appears as though they are going to come in under the wire, with a tentative release date of Christmas Eve, according to the Babbages and Software Etc.'s release date list."

So the source of the date is Babbages and Software Etc. Obviously, even if we did release dates, they would not be the first ones to get them. They regularly make up such information (probably to avoid having to answer constant questions about dates,) and have done so again.

    Max Schaefer
    Vice President, Blizzard North

PS: It will be released.... when it's done!

The Adrenaline Vault has already changed their news post, reflecting that they got this release date from retailers, not Blizzard itself.

  • Release Date News. (7/7)

A brief news post over at the Adrenaline Vault tells of a tentative release date for Diablo at Christmas (they peg it at Christmas Eve).  The small news brief details the appearance of Diablo II at E3 and also tells us they have begun work on the final stages, Battle.net, and have started internal beta testing.  The brief comes with 18 already-released screenshots, and you can see it for yourself here

  • Diablo II and the Intellimouse Explorer... (7/7)

The Intellimouse Explorer is a new mouse designed by Microsoft that will be coming out soon.  The Intellimouse Explorer will have 5 buttons, two of which can probably be mapped with leaves the left, right, and scroll buttons.  Diablo II will be one of the first games to support the new Intellimoise Explorer.

Today we wish Ariochel, our Editor-in-Chief, a very happy 23rd birthday.  Though he is not highly exposed to the viewers, Ariochel performs a very important function here, and he is indespensible to our day to day operation.  Happy Birthday, Ariochel

The newest Screenshot of the Week is up, but unforunately do to the move to our new domain we don´t have our Pics Gallery quite up and running as of yet.  We will have it back up as soon as possible, but for now you can see the SSOTW here

  • Liber Fictionarum Update. (7/6)

I have updated the Liber Fictionarum with the next story in the Magus Cycle, called "The Dark Council".  This story deals further with the Necromance heretics of the Vizjerei and Tariel´s role with them.  Hope you enjoy the story.

  • Diablo II Demo? (7/6)

Before you die of shock, just know that it´s not what you´re thinking.  On Gamespot, the Diablo II Demo is listed as one of their top 5 downloads, but this "demo" is in actuality the two gameplay movies that were released on the 18th of June.  You can find these movies in our Downloads section, and they have been analyzed at the Articles section.

  • Gamestar Analysis Finished... (7/5)

I have finally gotten a chance to get a good copy of the new Gamestar Movie and I have finished an analysis of it.  You can see my analysis in our Articles section or directly by clicking here

  • Download Mirrors. (7/4)

If you´ve had any problems getting the new Gamestar movie download, then you´ll be pleased to know we´ve added several mirrors for that download.  I haven´t got a chance to analyze the movie my copy of it proved to be corrupt.  You´ll find those mirrors in our Downloads section.

  • Newsletter Sent... (7/4)

The ShadowSpiral Newsletter has just been shipped and should arrive in eveyone´s in-boxes momentarily.  If you didn´t recieve a copy of the newsletter, or have any other problems with the newsletter, just let us know.

  • Domain Name Switch. (7/4)

Today is a monumental day for everyone here at ShadowSpiral Diablo II as we have finally acquired a domain for ourselves and our site.  You will now be able to find us at the address listed, so be sure to change your bookmarks and favorites, as the redirector at our Tripod site won´t last for a long time.  Also, be aware that everything is still being worked on, so the page might be inaccessable at times, and certain parts of the site are still in a state of transition.

All in all, it will be a good move.  We look forward to it, and the chance to finally appear to a wider audiance.  Everything should be back up and functioning without errors by Tuesday (July 6).

  • New Gameplay Movie. (7/3)

Gamestar has released yet another gameplay movie, this one 41 MB and about 4 minutes long.  Gamestar has always graced us with exceptional movies, and have little doubt that this one will follow that trend.  I will have an analysis up as soon as possible, but for now you can find the movie in our Downloads section.

  • Diablo II Resolutions... (7/3)

Given the screenshots released with the Gamesmania - Bill Roper interview, the debate about the 800x600 resolution being Diablo II has flared up again.  To quell this debate, Mike Huang of Blizzard offers the following explanation:

"While there have been many suggestions for higher resolutions on the game, there are basically two ways to implement this:

    A) Keep the game art the same size (that is, 1 pixel on 640x480 is 1 pixel at 800x600), which lends itself to benefit those who are running 800x600 to see more of the area around them, giving them a visibility advantage, hence this will NEVER be an option.

    B) Scale up the game art in a ratio proportial to the two resolutions, so that 1 pixel at 640x480 resolution equates into 1.25 pixels at 800x600. The problem with this solution is that in the normal (non 3d enhanced mode) you would see no noticable difference. It would look virtually identical. There would also be some CPU cost in doing the scaling.

So, those are the arguments against 800x600 for the game. "

So, there we have it, the two greatest arguments against the 800x600 resolution.  But remember, anything can happen between now and Diablo II´s release.

  • Big News. (7/2)

Well, I have big news for everyone who comes to ShadowSpiral Diablo II for news and information, we are finally making the move to our own domain.  I, and the rest of my staff, are very thrilled about this move, and can´t wait to implement more into the site as we go.  We should be up on the new server by Monday, July 5th, but it may be sooner or later depending on how things go.  Despite the move, we will still be the same site at heart, and we will always be open to your suggestions or comments.

  • Interview Analysis... (7/1)

We have completed the analysis of Bill Roper´s interview with Gamesmania, and you can find it in our Articles section, or access it directly by clicking here.  The interview was packed with tons of new information and expansions on what we already knew.  If you haven´t read the interview yet, then you should.

  • We´ve Archived June´s News. (7/1)

Well, July has come and it´s time to archive June into our News Archive to make way for all of July´s news.  I´m sure this month will be as packed as the rest, and it seems to increase as we get closer and closer to Diablo II´s final release.  I´m glad everyone has stuck with us this far.
